UK: Britain urged to rethink approach to Europe
20 décembre 2011 // 0 CommentairesA group of prominent businessmen have urged the UK Government to « re-engage in the decision-making process » in the European Union, in a letter published in the Daily Telegraph today.
Following Britain’s decision to veto EU treaty reforms, the business leaders stress the importance of protecting the European single market, with it accounting for half of Britain’s trade. At the same time, they quote UK Government figures which estimate that some 3 million jobs rely on exports to Europe.
On Monday, European countries agreed a 150bn euro package (£125bn) for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to use for the Eurozone which Britain declined to join, since the country favours a global approach to increasing IMF funds.
