A government review has recommended that in the future, people will only be able to get a medical certificate for the first four weeks of absence due to illness. After this,  employers should be able to send their employees to an independent panel of doctors. At the same time, a service to help people on sick leave find more appropriate jobs could also be created.

According to the Department for Work and Pensions, some 140 million days are lost annually due to illness. This costs employers £9bn in sick pay while taxpayers have to find £13bn in health related benefits. The government believes that potential savings could amount to £400m per year for employers and £300m for the state.
