Flags_onu_genevaAs Geneva is the world capital of NGOs, with hundreds of NGOs based in Geneva including some 250 which enjoy a consultative status with the United Nations, we were intrigued to learn about the NGO Management School and their activities. Victoria Jones, the Head of Learning and Development, kindly agreed to answer our questions.

NGO Management School (NMS) was established in 2009 under the parent NGO Management Association (NMA), founded in 2002 as an answer to the growing demand from the non-profit community to provide training for leaders of NGOs and other non-profits. NMS offers a variety of specialist courses to key players in the NGO and non-profit community. After an initial pilot phase, NMS attained EduQua certification and began to develop partnerships with related educational establishments in a number of countries. During the past few years, they have trained over a thousand NGO professionals from around the world, a great achievement for the School, currently operating from their new offices in the Eaux Vives area of Geneva.

NMS provides short, effective training solutions to those working in the development and humanitarian fields and is itself a non-profit organisation. Trainers are all highly experienced professionals, all of whom have extensive field-work experince. Courses are offered on a wide variety of topics such as fundraising, project management, advocacy, communications, human resources, strategic management and professional development. The ‘Essentials of NGO Management is a very popular 5-day introductory programme for newly appointed project managers, consultants, team leaders or newcomers to the field who are looking to gain insight and appreciate the unique dilemas to address.

Training at the NGO Management School stands out due to the interactive action-learning approach used and the networking possibilities generated by bringing like-minded professionals together. Most courses are between 3-5 days in length and take place either at the school here in Geneva or in an organisation’s home country. Certificate programmes are provided in partnership with other institutions, such as the post graduate Certificate of Advanced Studies which is jointly run with Geneva’s flagship Centre for Humanitarian Action (CERAH-Centre d’enseignment et de recherche en action humanitaire de Genève). For local participants, the CAF (Chèque Annuel de Formation) can be used towards the course fees. Participants who book well in advance benefit from a substantial reduction.

The School’s parent Association (NMA) provides tailored consultancy and coaching solutions throughout the world, spreading knowledge and empowering civil society initiatives by helping organisations to better prepare for the issues they face.

With several ongoing projects like the launch of the ‘Executive Certificate in NGO Management in Nigeria, the association has become a Learning Centre of Excellence for non-profit organisations. “In the future we would like to be able to provide scholarships to promising talent, train more trainers in their home country and develop blended learning solutions to facilitate access to knowledge and know-how”, adds Victora Jones.
