The European Trade Union Confederation (Etuc) has said it hopes some 100 000 workers representing 30 different european nations will take part in a march in Brussels today.

The focus of the march is to protest against Europe-wide plans to cut budgets drastically in the face of the financial crisis which the umbrella organisation fears could ‘result in even more unemployment’ than the 23 million people across the EU which it says have already lost their jobs. Etuc is arguing for stable jobs, strong social protection and improved pensions for workers.

At the same time, a general strike is in progress in Spain and further protest action is expected in other countries, including Greece, Poland, Ireland and Serbia.
