Brazil: First woman president elected

Brazilians have elected Dilma Rousseff as the successor to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as president. She becomes the first woman president of Brazil after a second round of voting which saw her get 54% of votes against the Social Democratic candidate Jose Serra. Ms Roussef was endorsed by President Lula and benefitted from the huge popular support which he continues to enjoy. She will take office on the 1 January 2011, with the promise of making the eradication of poverty her priority.
