France: Total promises no French refinery closures for 5 years
Amid strike action by unions at plans to reduce output by closing its Dunkirk refinery, Total has promised not to close or sell any of its six French refineries for five years. Instead, the Lindsey refinery in Britain has been earmarked for closure. French President Nicolas Sarkozy intervened to request the moratorium on shutting refineries and since then, the company and CGT union have continued with talks to end the seven-day old strike which has seen French petrol supplies affected. According to UFIP, the French petroleum industry body, France had seven days worth of fuel in stock as of 22 February.
