Germany: Jobless total up in January but optimism remains
Following recent falls in the unemployment total in Germany, the latest official figures show that the rate rose 0.1% in January to 8.2%. This represents an increase of 6 000 people in the total which now stands at 3.43 million. The Federal Labour Office asserted that reductions in working hours had helped to minimise rises in the jobless figures. At the same time, an independent analysis at ING blamed the increase on the recent cold weather in the country while stressing that seasonally-adjusted unemployment showed only minor growth.
