Both of the main airports in Berlin, Tegel and Schoenefeld, have been affected by strikes today. As a result, air travel to Berlin has been almost completely stopped, with Schoenefeld airport cancelling 22 flights and Tegel yet to receive any.
The strikes were called after the collapse of the fifth round of wage discussions between the Verdi union, which represents 90% of ground crews at the airports and their employers, GlobeGround Berlin, Ground Service International and Acciona.
GlobeGround has used replacement staff to assist with passengers and luggage.
