The importance of education cannot be overstated. Finding the correct balance between requirements and self-chosen direction can be a challenging, if not often underappreciated, achievement.
Today’s students are bombarded with more media “noise” than ever before. Life and its choices have fundamentally changed in the past 10 years, and show no signs of slowing down. Finding one’s own voice in the cacophony is ever more important in forming a solid base for a successful future.
How can we, those with experience and influence, encourage and channel student enthusiasm, all while providing a structured approach to realistic career goals? Mr. Norbert Foerster of the Institut International de Lancy (IIL) has pioneered the annual “Careers Convention” at their modern Grand Lancy campus. Much more than just a gathering of institutes vying for applicants, this forum is a diverse and meaningful attempt to unite a host of student possibilities.
Convention Coordinators Moira Martin and Victoria Gabb have successfully gathered representatives from the diverse worlds of Architecture, Economics, Psychology, Gaming and Nursing who make themselves available to offer valuable insights to the attendees and to encourage a positive conversation about their future. This introspective approach guided by industry expertise is a powerful tool with which to equip our young scholars.
Soon celebrating its third year, the Career Convention has steadily grown in breadth and reputation while maintaining strict control on relevant content. Local presenters scheduled throughout the evening touch on topics tailored to the needs and requirements of the students in attendance. Further reinforcing the depth of this innovative approach is a system of reciprocal placement between IIL and local corporations through internships and work-experience opportunities.
On a macro level, this initiative is even more impressive, as IIL’s student body represents over 96 nationalities (approximately half of the world’s countries). Uniting such an impressive percentage of the globe under one roof and at one convention truly speaks to the immense potential of such a well-thought out project. Students are able to define their goals early on and, supported by parents and educators, could ultimately take their choices to fruition.
IIL Director Mr. Norbert Foerster also actively organizes frequent interactive student participation with international figureheads such as Lord Nigel Lawson, economist Jacques Attali and visionary Bertrand Piccard. Developing this important dialogue is his way if ensuring the success of his students.
My participation as an invited exhibitor on the role that Philanthropy plays on the corporate agenda was an enlightening experience. I was able to speak directly with students interested not only in earning a large bonus, but also with those who are truly engaged in the fundamental needs of the developing world. I left with a sense of hope, knowing that today’s efforts will continue to be supported by tomorrow’s hearts and minds.
