Japan Airlines (JAL) has announced plans to cut its workforce by one third – or 16 000 positions – in an attempt to climb out of bankruptcy protection. Some job losses will arise from early retirement whilst others will go through the sale of subsidiaries.
JAL’s workforce stood at 48 714 at the beginning of 2009 and will fall to 32 600 by the end of 2010, with the restructuring forming part of a government supported bail-out.
