The Leader of the Scottish Labour party is to advocate an increase in the minimum wage for public sector workers from the current figure of £5.80 an hour for over 22 year-olds to in excess of £7 an hour.

Iain Gray will address the Labour party conference in Manchester, where he is also expected to propose salary caps for the highest paid public sector employees.

The Scottish parliament faces elections next May and these announcements come against a background of anticipated UK wide spending cuts due to be revealed in October.
