Barclays Bank will create up to 600 jobs in Glasgow with the announcement that it is to set up a new support function for its investment and wealth management divisions in the city.

Barclays will receive financial assistance of over £6.5m from Scottish Enterprise in the form of Regional Selective Assistance Funding.

The financial services industry employs some 95 000 people in Scotland but suffered a blow in the last two weeks with the announcement that Direct Line and Standard Life had plans to make 900 people redundant between them.
