The Low Pay Commission has been urged to recommend that the government increase the National Minimum Wage for the year from October 2011 by the Trades Union Congress (TUC). The TUC are pushing for a rise of 21 pence to £ 6.14 an hour, an increase of 3.5% which will match expected Retail Price Index rises during the same period.

According to the TUC, women, ethnic minorities, the disabled, youth and seniors would benefit the most from any rise while the economy would benefit from increased consumer spending and the government would have to pay out less in tax-credits and in-work benefits.
