UK: BA in new job cuts
After requesting staff to work for free, take unpaid leave or work part-time for a month during the summer reduce its cost base, British Airways has announced plans to make 1 700 people redundant from the end of November 2009. The measures mean that 1000 cabin crew will be asked to take voluntary redundancy, whilst another 3000 will go part-time. BA is expected to post a heavy loss for the second consecutive year and while it has been in discussions with the union Unite over how to cut staff costs, Unite has warned its members that it does not believe that these will be the end of the jobs cuts at the airline.
BA also said that it would continue to pursue plans to recruit new staff on contracts with different terms and conditions to current employees.
