UK: BA staff to strike at Christmas?
Following failed talks between British Airways and the Unite union last week over proposed job cuts and changes to staff working arrangements, the result of a strike ballot is expected today. If the result is for industrial action, the Christmas travel period could be hit from as early as 21 December. BA recorded losses of £292m ($485m) for the six month period to the end of September and has been seeking compulsory redundancies as well as a decrease in cabin crew levels. The Union had proposed a pay cut for two years but BA didn’t believe that the offer wouls provide the required cost savings.
