UK: BA strike ruled illegal

The ongoing dispute between British Airways and the Unite trade union, which had led to the union declaring a 12-day strike over the Christmas period from 22 December, has taken a new turn. The planned strike action has been ruled illegal in the High Court, meaning that it cannot now take place without a fresh ballot of union members. Given industrial relations laws, any new threat of strikes would not materialise until well into 2010. In her ruling, the judge backed BA’s assertion that the inclusion of votes from workers who had already voluntarily left the company meant that the result was invalid. The disagreement between employer and employees is over a proposed 2-year pay freeze and changes to working conditions.
