UK: BAA in union talks over airports strike

BAA are meeting representatives of the Unite union in an effort to stave off strike action which could close six UK airports, including Heathrow, Stansted, Southampton, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen. The Acas conciliation service backed talks are taking place on the same day that Unite members are due to meet to discuss their plans for strike action after voting three to one in favour of walkouts.

Any industrial action could start as soon as 23 August, following the statutory seven days notice which must be given, with some observers suggesting the 28 August Bank Holiday weekend as being a likely target to ensure the maximum impact.

Security staff, engineers, and firefighters have rejected a pay offer which could reach 1.5% this year as ‘measly’ whilst BAA assert that with passenger numbers down due to the recession and the volcanic ash cloud, it is realistic.
