UK: Communications Union cancels strike vote

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has decided to abandon its strike ballot over a 5% pay rise after receiving legal advice that any result could have been invalid due to ‘technical breaches’.

The CWU has been in dispute with BT over pay and redundancies and had been ballotting its members over the possibility of taking the first large-scale industrial action faced by the telecommunications company since 1987.

The union has welcomed the news that BT has offered fresh talks, while also stating that it would seek to hold a new ballot once it had resolved ‘procedural issues’.
