UK: Continued improvement in UK jobs market in September

A report by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation and KPMG shows that the number of people finding permanent work has increased for the second successive month, with the demand for temporary staff rising for the first time in 15 months. However, the Chief Executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation sounded a note of caution by suggesting that the fact that many employees retained more staff than has happened in previous recessions means that they already have the people in place to respond to increases in demand. As a result, there may not be the increase in recruitment that could be expected with an economic upturn.
At the same time, the Head of Business Services at KPMG raised the prospect of a private sector recovery accompanied by large-scale public sector redundancies forced on the Government in an attempt to reduce the budget deficit.
