Following criticism by the business community of the temporary limits put in place to restrict the number of non-EU migrant workers in the UK, the government has said it will favour work permits for highly paid staff.

The limit of 24 100 workers for this year will stay in place, but those employees earning over £40,000 will have their applications given priority. The move has been welcomed by the British Chambers of Commerce, whose members had complained they were ‘struggling to operate’ under the original terms of the restrictions.
