Permanent and temporary job placements experienced their lowest rate of growth in 10 months in August, according to a survey from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (Rec). At the same time, some sectors such as chefs, nurses, engineers and internet developers offered opportunities as a result of a lack of skilled workers.

Unemployment fell by 49 000 in the three months to the end of June, although KPMG, the joint author of the report, warned of increasing numbers of public sector redundancies as the government begins to implement spending cuts to reduce the budget deficit.
