UK: More part-timers than ever

According to the Office for National Statistics, 27% of the total workforce is now in part-time employment, due to a record rise of 148 000 in the number of part-time workers in the three months to May. In total, employment rose by 160 000 with just 12 000 of those new jobs being full-time posts. Figures also show a fall of 34 000 in the number of unemployed to 2.47 million, bringing the rate down to 7.8%, the lowest since January 2010. However, long-term unemployment increased by 61 000 over the same period, 47.5% higher than in the same quarter in 2009.
