Siemens, REpower and Weir Group have launched a new wind turbine apprenticeship scheme aimed at making up for the engineering skills shortage in the sector. Siemens plans to double its ‘renewables workforce’ in the next three years and views the apprenticeship scheme as a cornerstone of this objective.
RenewableUK, the wind energy trade body, predicts that 30% of the UK’s energy requirements will come from wind generated power by 2020, up from 5% today and as a result, 60 000 new jobs will be created in the next ten years.
