UK: North-East to lose 1700 jobs from Friday

The Corus steel-producing plant at Redcar, Teeside, is due to stop production this Friday. 1700 people are directly employed at Teeside Cast Products with the local council estimating some additional 8000 jobs could be at risk in surrounding companies. Corus had planned to mothball the site at the end of January but then reached an agreement with unions to keep the plant open for an additional month to try and secure its future. Although the government has promised £60m to try and help the area recover, some believe that the money should be used to keep the steelworks open.
