As the maxim says, “Whether you think you can, or you can’t, you’re right.”
UK: Unemployment down slightly
The number of unemployed fell by 9000 to 2.45 million in the three months to September, a rate of 7.7%. In the same period, total employment in the UK rose by 167 000 to reach 29.19 million. The disparity between the two figures suggests that while some unemployed have been finding work, other ‘inactive’ people have started looking actively for work again and are thus contributing to the total number of unemployed.
The Office for National Statistics data also showed part-time work making up 27.3% of total employment compared to 25.4% in mid-2008.
There was also a 2% rise in average pay in the three months when compared to the same period last year.
