According to a report from the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR), unemployment will continue to increase to reach a maximum of 2.9 million in 2011. It added that while the increase in the number of jobless has been lower than expected, employment has fallen more than predicted once you consider the adjustment of real wages and average hours worked.
In the last quarter of 2009, the UK economy grew 0.1% to finally come out of recession, though this was less than forecast.
