US: Ford aims to reduce staff through payouts
All 41 000 hourly paid workers employed by Ford in the US have been offered buyout packages in a bid to cut factory costs. Staff with over one year’s service are being offered $50 000 basic, plus $25 000 in vouchers to purchase a Ford vehicle or $20 000 in cash. Those taking the package who are near retirement will have to wait 18 months before retiring. At the beginning of 2009, Ford employed 89 000 people in the US, while the current figure stands at 80 200, including 1000 who took a similar package earlier this year. Ford has not revealed how many people it is hoping to attract with this deal.
