The US Bookshop Borders has filed for bankruptcy protection and is to close 200 of its 642 stores in the next few weeks.

The firm has been hit by increased competition from supermarkets, online retailers and digital formats whilst total sales in the US book market fell from 751 million to 717 million in 2010, according to the researcher Nielsen.
