Restructuring of operations at the pharmaceutical company Pfizer will see 6000 people – or 20% of the 33 000 strong workforce – lose their jobs in the next 5 years. Pfizer, which bought Wyeth pharmaceuticals in 2009, intends to close 8 factories and decrease activity at 6 others. According to the company, changes are required as a result of the rapidly evolving and competitive nature of the marketplace.
Nat Ricciardi, global manufacturing president, said the company would “provide support to our colleagues who lose their jobs so that their transition to new careers is as smooth as possible.” Pfizer also announced that they would try to find purchasers for their sites to reduce the “impact to communities”.
