10 best accounting software in Switzerland

Welcome to our comprehensive guide on the best accounting software available in Switzerland. Whether you are a freelancer, entrepreneur, or small business owner, this article is for you. Before diving into the specifics, let us explore the key considerations and steps involved in selecting the ideal accounting software for your business needs.

Cloud-Based or Local

The trend towards cloud-based applications is undeniable. They offer advantages like minimal installation and maintenance costs, automatic updates, and accessibility from any location. However, some businesses might prioritize local software for security or customization purposes.

Feature Comparison

Once your needs are identified, compare the features offered by different accounting software solutions. Look for comprehensive functionality that aligns with your requirements, whether it's stock management, project tracking, invoicing, or payroll management. Bear in mind that additional features often come with higher costs, so strike a balance between functionality and budget.

Compatibility and User Reviews

Ensure compatibility with your existing business applications. User reviews offer valuable insights into the software's usability and reliability. They can provide firsthand accounts of user experiences, helping you make an informed decision.

Technical Support

Evaluate the level of technical support provided by the software provider. Access to round-the-clock technical assistance ensures that help is available whenever you need it.

By following these steps, you can identify the accounting software that best suits your business needs.

Let’s jump into what I believe is the 10 Best Accounting Software in Switzerland.

  1. BEXIO

This is designed especially for small businesses, sole proprietors, and freelancers. It is cloud-based and in addition to accounting, including accounts receivable and accounts payable, the starter package also includes functions for contact management, quotes, banking, and product management. Additional functionalities such as payroll accounting or an online store can be licensed as an option.

  1. CRESUS

The simplest accounting software. It is designed for small and medium-sized industries and freelancers. It’s Swiss accounting software. Cresus software is divided into four distinct parts: Cresus Accounting, Cresus Banking, Cresus Invoicing, and Cresus Salaries. Cresus Accounting has VAT statement and e-VAT, grouping of accounts, simplified controlling, keep working while your fiduciary checks your accounts, chart of accounts (in accordance with accounting law) can be modified at any time, entries with multiple debits or credits, and automatic closing and reopening, etc.

  1. SAGE

The most popular and recognized accounting solution in the business world. It is designed for small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as mid-sized companies. Although Sage software is very comprehensive and powerful, it may require some time to master. It is cloud-based and available in three different versions: Sage Start, Sage Accounting Standard, and the more advanced version Sage Accounting Plus. It includes invoicing, inventory management, business reporting, and automatic bank reconciliation.

  1. WINBIZ

The most popular in French-speaking Switzerland since 1992. Designed primarily for small and medium-sized businesses, start-ups, and freelancers. Windows-based, it includes invoicing, payroll, inventory management, banking, and reporting (50 plus built-in reports with custom fields and calculations). Affordable and easy to use.

  1. OFFICE MAKER

The accounting program for MAC OS. This Swiss software offers management in the fields of finance, commerce, and human resources. It is cloud or local-based software with a user-friendly interface.

  1. ABACUS

The accounting program for small companies. It’s a cloud-based software. The platform allows users to visualize data using Gantt charts, track project timelines or key dates, and forecast configuration risks. Abacus has two kinds of software: AbaNinja and AbaWeb.

- AbaNinja is functionally and navigationally simple and understandable, making it suitable for beginners.

- AbaWeb, on the other hand, has several modules and many automated processes, making it rather difficult for inexperienced users. Modules such as payroll accounting, orders, or e-banking must be purchased separately. The standard package of AbaNinja already includes accounting, banking, time recording, and debit and credit cards.

  1. BANANA

The software was developed especially for small companies. It has a long history and has been known on the Swiss market since 1990. The design is similar to Excel. The program can be easily adapted to one’s own needs, if one knows how accounting works. Accounting features include VAT management, customer/suppliers, cost centers, segments, and more. However, the disadvantage is that Banana does not offer payroll accounting.

  1. CASHCTRL

Designed for smaller companies, and is suitable for beginners. It has been on the market since 2013, yet has a modern design and simple functionality. The free version includes financial accounting, accounts receivable, master data VAT, and various reports. In the Pro version, API connections, file managers, cost centers, order processing, and backups can also be used as additional functions. Unfortunately, payroll cannot be integrated, and online banking is only partially available and only in the Pro version.

  1. KLARA

Designed especially for the SME market and is suitable for users without prior knowledge of accounting due to automated processes and an intuitive user interface. It automatically posts incoming and outgoing payments.

  1. RUN MY ACCOUNT

Published in 2008, it offers an online accounting solution primarily aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It simplifies the accounting process by allowing documents to be scanned directly. Customers then approve these documents using an online workflow tool, and payments are uploaded directly to the customer’s e-banking. It includes daily accounting, bank synchronizing , VAT management, and document storage.
